What's one movement you'd like to make easier?

Coordination for Your Daily Life

The Feldenkrais Method examines how clarifying your coordination can improve your ease of movement. Because efficient coordination supports almost everything we do, Awareness Through Movement® presents a unique opportunity for relevance in your daily life.

Whether you are reaching for a high shelf, navigating a flight of stairs, or sitting down to play a musical instrument, the quality of your coordination, balance, and strength become the invisible foundation. When that foundation is clear, your movements can feel like a dependable resource. When that foundation isn’t clear, daily life can feel like a clumsy uphill climb.

Moving into April and throughout the summer, I'll be focusing on Feldenkrais lessons designed to bridge the gap between the mat and your "real world" behavior. The series consists of 15 lessons total, offered in three 5-week 'chapters.' You can join us for a single block or stay for the full 15-week progression to experience a re-education in your daily movement.

A Series Shaped by You

This series of lessons is unique because it is open to student requests. I want to draw on my experience to provide the specific lessons that will most improve your daily life.

I invite you to submit requests for specific movements or behaviors you wish to clarify. Potential areas of focus include:

  • Foundational Mobility: Transitions such as getting out of bed, sitting, and standing.
  • Environmental Navigation: Climbing stairs, walking on varied terrain, or getting in and out of a vehicle.
  • Complex Coordination: Tasks involving load, such as carrying groceries or yard work.
  • Refined Performance: The precise organization required for dancing or playing a musical instrument.

Any human behavior can be a subject for our investigation.

What would you like to clarify?

I’m asking each of you to help shape this curriculum. What is one daily activity or behavior you would like to feel more coordinated, more balanced, or stronger with?

Please reply to this email with your request. I will be using your feedback to select the lessons we dive into, ensuring our time together is as relevant to your life as possible.

I look forward to hearing what you are curious about.

Warmly,

Sarah

There is a story often told about the anthropologist Margaret Mead. When a student asked her what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture, they expected her to say a clay pot, a fishhook, or a grinding stone. Instead, she reportedly held up a healed femur bone. In the animal kingdom, a broken leg is a death sentence. You cannot run from danger, you cannot get to the river for a drink, and you cannot hunt for food. You are meat for prowling predators. A femur bone that...

Hi everyone, I’ll be honest, trying to run a business right now feels fundamentally wrong. But having heard from enough of you individually, I know how important showing up for you is, now more than ever, so I keep going. For those of you feeling effected by the events in Minneapolis, first, understand what is happening in your own body. Your nervous system cannot distinguish between "this is happening to me" and "this is happening near me". When you watch violence, your brain treats it as a...
