Moving from the floor to standing (literally and figuratively) . . .

Real Life Functional Transitions

I’ve spent a lot of time lately thinking about how we stay upright when the ground feels like it's shifting and the world feels increasingly destabilizing. In movement, we know that most injuries and 'clunky' feelings happen in the 'space between'—those transitional moments where we lose our center. If it feels like your whole life is happening in that unsettled space, and you are in need of some free nervous system resources, this is a good place to start.

Over the last few Monday morning classes, I’ve been experimenting with something a little bit different: dedicating a small portion of class to exploring functional transitions. Instead of just focusing on a final pose, we started looking at how we get from the floor to standing, how we navigate the space in between, and how we practice balance during functional moments.

The response from students was clear, that these are deeply practical and useful tools to train and improve on.

Because it resonated so much, I’ve decided to make it a soft focus of our next 8-week Yoga & Feldenkrais Blended Series, where we will practice some of the functional transitions we often take for granted, (until they become difficult).

How we move on the mat should change how we move in the world.

Livestream classes will be taught over Zoom

Join us for this unique format, blending the gentle strengthening and deep stretching of Yoga with the intelligent, learning-focused principles of the Feldenkrais Method® to refine your Yoga practice.

These 8 weeks will have a focus on:

  • Functional transitions
  • Finding stability through coordination, not just muscle
  • Ways to move between the floor and standing
  • Reconnecting with the primary developmental patterns that support how we move

The emphasis will be on the pathway, not just the destination of a pose.

Students who have made this format their regular routine call it their "weekly maintenance practice" and "meditation and movement combined."

We often shrink our movements to stay 'safe,' but true safety comes from knowing how to use your power. This series is about reclaiming the big, joyful movements of life— getting up from the floor, reaching without strain, and moving through the world with a sense of unstoppable coordination. This isn't about "working out"; it’s about organizing your internal architecture so that your largest movements feel as light as your smallest ones.

While this is a slightly different format than I typically offer, it feels extremely pertinent and meaningful right now. Our phones are one of the ways we stay connected and informed, but finding a healthy balance is critical for mental, physical, and emotional health.

Normally, I feel pretty good about my own boundaries with technology. But lately, I’ve found myself reaching for my phone for no reason at all, scrolling through news alerts before bed "just to be sure." I’ve felt the physical toll of this high-alert state: a tighter chest, a shallower breath, locked shoulders, and a mind that feels constantly fragmented.

I realized that if I’m feeling this pull, many of you likely are, too.

Join me for a free Q & A session on Sunday, February 1st @ 5:30pm. No one will be turned away for a lack of funds. I hope for this to be a robust group of like minded individuals that could use a little accountability. Ultimately the practice of changing our phone habits will bring us to a place of more presence and self awareness.

Please reach out with any questions.
If you are in need of free nervous system resources, this is a good place to start.

Peace,
Sarah

So far, we have explored: The Reach Upward: Improving the mechanics of reaching for a heavy ceramic bowl, taking off a sweater, or simply brushing your hair.
