The 60 Pound Head 😵‍💫 How to Break Up With Your Phone

Try a quick moment of noticing with me.

Right now, as you read this, notice the position of your head. Is it tilted forward? Are your eyes locked on the screen, pulling your chin toward your chest?

The "60-lb" Fact: The average human head weighs about 10–12 lbs. But when we tilt our heads forward at a 60-degree angle to look at a phone, the effective weight on our neck muscles surges to nearly 60 lbs. That’s like carrying a large dog around your neck all day.

Our phone habits are physical habits. If we want to change our relationship with technology, we have to start with how we inhabit our bodies while we use it.

This is exactly what we’ll be practicing in my upcoming book/support group: How to Break Up With Your Phone. We’ll combine Catherine Price’s famous 30-day protocol with Feldenkrais-based movements to rewire the "reflexive reach" and soothe the "tech-neck" for good.

There will be a Q & A session about the book group on February 1st @ 5:30pm CST. Come with your questions and curiosities, as well as a willingness to share your own challenges that you encounter when being in relation to your phone.

If you’re ready to reclaim your attention (and your neck!), you can grab your spot below:

🔗 Book Support Group
February 15th - March 15th
Sundays @ 5:30pm CST
Livestream on Zoom

While this is a slightly different format than I typically offer, it feels extremely pertinent and meaningful right now. Our phones are one of the ways we stay connected and informed, but finding a healthy balance is critical for mental, physical, and emotional health.

I am excited to hold others accountable and be held in accountability with this book and the group that joins. I first engaged with this book last year, after realizing that every morning my brain felt hijacked by my phone, and I am still experiencing the lasting effects from the four week protocol.

Ultimately our practice to change our phone habits will bring us to a place of more presence and self awareness.

DATES AND INFO:

  • Sundays: 5:30 -6:30pm CST on zoom
  • February 1st Free Q & A session, how to prepare
  • February 15th: Introductions/ Motivation for Joining

WE WILL REFLECT ON:

What are you seeking when you reach for your phone?
What are you avoiding when you reach for your phone?
What can you learn about yourself through your phone habits?
What do you truly want to be paying attention to?

CLARIFICATION: Breaking up with your phone does not mean throwing it away and never using it. Breaking up with your phone means that you’re ending the enmeshed, out of control aspects of your relationship and hopefully replacing it with more of a healthy friendship in addition to added time for joyful activities.

TOOLS & PRACTICES WE WILL USE: Check -ins / Journaling / Sharing with a small group or partner / Sharing with the whole group / Noticing / Meditation / Open Movement / Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement / Discussion of the Book

Take the quiz: Are you addicted to your phone?

We’ll walk through the four weeks of the phone breakup plan together, with the goal of creating new relationships with our smartphones that feel good.

This support group will be a lot more fun if you do it with other people, so invite a friend, and let’s practice together.
